Leadership discussions have gone from scientific management, to transactional skills to transformational leadership. However, the theme for this year’s conference of 21st Century Leaders & Adaptive Capacity reflects the change in focus and the realization in the literature that what we once thought of as “soft skills” are crucial in order to be a skilled leader. We need to be Resonant Leaders and Morally Intelligent. We need to have a keen awareness of our personal emotional intelligence. Plus, we need to act in a way that models such behavior for our students, staff, and community. How do we do that?
Ray Kelly, one of our keynote speakers from the Lennick Aberman Group, will discuss key elements of Moral Intelligence by Doug Lennick and Fred Kiel, Ph.D. The book talks about moral competencies—integrity, responsibility, forgiveness, and compassion. It discusses how someone can be cognitively adept, but without moral competencies, the efforts to be an effective leader will fall short of expectations.
There are many powerful ideas in the book. I have also provided discussion questions that one may use with leadership teams to continue the discussion on a local level.
