Thinking Fast and Slow
Daniel Kahneman
Daniel Kahneman in his book Thinking Fast and Slow explains how we think—System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative and more logical. He explores the biases in how we think and how it affects our thoughts and behaviors.
Although he is an economist, his research has implications for all of us in how we think, how we present information, how we process, and how we make political decisions.
His research affects all of us as we recognize that we live in a political environment that is often driven by the bottom line. Too often in schools we look to the business community for understanding of how education should work. Perhaps we look to the business community too much because education, particularly public education, is not a business. Schools are often criticized because of how do we possibly measure the value-added of an education.
There are many possibilities to discuss in leadership teams as to the ramifications of his research. His book provides many examples and explanations of his conclusions which I have not included in the book notes. You will enjoy them as you read the book, but I tried to make notes that will engage your thinking and your wonderment. You can explore the more in-depth examples when you read the book.
Companion Books:
Two books that add to the discussion about words and the political mind are The Political Mind by George Lakoff and Words that Work: It’s Not what you Say; it’s what people Hear.
The Political Mind talks about how people misunderstand reason which leads to so many “Americans being willing to vote against their own interests.” Book Jacket.
Words that Work talks how words are used to “influence and motivate, the way they connect thought and emotion.” Book Jacket.
Enjoy!
