One of the best recent books about instruction is Mike Schmoker's Focus. If has something to offer for teachers who have no experience, for teachers who have taught for years and all those in between. He emphasizes the fact that we should do what we know works and avoid tinkering with passing fads. He talks about interactive lectures, best practice lesson design, authentic literacy in all disciplines, for example. If all teachers used the best practice lesson design, which is Madeline Hunter, we would have better instruction and more learning. He even gives suggestions on how all teachers, even math teachers, can incorporate literacy strategies which is particularly important as our classrooms become increasingly diverse.
This book is excellent for book discussion groups for teachers. It's helpful for administrators as they observe teachers because it will help them give teachers guidance in how to be a better instructor.
It's not a thick book but it's rich with practical, sound ways to improve instruction.
