Yong Zhao has always been a supporter of American education. In his latest book he describes how we are going the wrong direction, as we go toward Common Core Standards, with NCLB and Race to the Top.
In this global society we need to educate students to be creative, entrepreneurial, alert to change, and able to engage in a global community. Instead, we are narrowing our curriculum and moving away from the talents that Americans are known for.
Many of his ideas are more applicable to secondary schools. But we need to change our focus in our state and in our nation. We still need to educate students in the basics; they need to know how to read, write, compute, and use technology. However, students need to be focused on learning, not test scores, not concentrating on learning facts to pass standardized tests.
We can learn from Yong Zhao, Ben Levin, Dave Weinberger and we can change education. But we need to be more proactive and engaged in changing the political landscape.
Zhao's book reinforces what we know to be true. The question is How do we put it into action?
