Every teacher should own this book. The resources in the appendices are wonderful. Instead of just talking about making our classrooms more culturally responsive, Hollie provides resources and strategies to make it happen. The strategies are not hard to implement; in fact, they are fun.
Hollie describes the power of culture in determnining how students learn and behave in the classroom. He describes the "youth" culture that is often ignored but extremely important when trying to reach all kids. I remember thinking 30 year old teachers were OLD. So it was important when we had young teachers because we felt their energy and understanding. Recognizing the youth culture can happen with teachers of all ages!
He also provides a wonderful appendix of culturally responsive texts that speak to a variety of cultures. Great resource for language arts teachers, media speciailists, and professional development committees.
