What is instructional leadership? My fear is that this is another "buzzphrase" like PLCs. Instructional leadership is something we all want to do but it is hard to parse into components so that we can replicate it. In Linking Leadership Leithwood and Louis try to get at the complexity of the components of leadership and school culture to establish what makes a difference to student learning.
What they say, which makes so much sense to those of us who have worked in schools and/or been school administrators, is that it is a synergy of many things, including leadership, culture, professional development, vision, curriculum, instruction, assessment, etc.)
This book is very important because it names that school improvement is a PROCESS, one that takes time, patience, and leadership. There is no magic bullet or curriculum. There are things we can all do.
This book pairs nicely with Jim Knight's Unmistakable Impact. because the instructional leadership looks different based on position responsibilities.
