Simon Sinek's book on Start with Why emphasized the importance of knowing what an organization is really about. He and Jim Collins in Good to Great with his Hedgehog concept reinforce the need to have a sense of purpose and that all members of the organization understand the true purpose of WHY they come to work every day,.
Schools struggle with knowing their REAL purpose. Is it to educate students for a career, to prepare them for college, to prepare well-rounded human beings, or to provide safe, meaningful child care? What if we stopped saying "....... School District" and said we were "........Education District." A school is a building, a physical facility. Education is a process which should be different depending on those who are being educated.
His message provides food for thought as to how leaders lead. Does the leader in your organization have a clear sense of WHY that everyone knows? Does your organization start with the WHY first and then talk about the HOW??? Or do you spend all your time on the WHAT?
Hmmm.....more food for thought
